Diecast Model Cars Are For Big Kids Too

Race fans and diecast hot-rod collecting are natural partners. Whether race fans ever get the opportunity to actually meet their favorite drivers, or see their cars up close, fans can still collect model cars representing the real race cars.  Diecast models are especially desirable, as they are small scale replicas of the genuine hot-rods.

What Are Diecast Model Cars?

Diecast model cars made their initial appearance in the early to mid 20th century, as manufacturers created molds or dies for metal alloys, in order to cast replicas of popular hot-rods and other vehicles.  Matchbox models and Hot Wheels were some of the early favorites in the 1960s and 1970s. Diecast models became increasingly popular as details improved on the models and NASCAR racing gained ever increasing numbers of fans in the 1990s.

What Types and Sizes of Diecast Models are Available?

Diecast models exist in numerous types and sizes.  They range from model cars and trucks, to planes and helicopters, to motorcycles, trains, boats, and farm and construction equipment. Racing vehicles and hot-rods seem to be the most popular among collectors of diecast model cars. Sizes also vary, from miniatures only about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length, to larger models up to 14 or 15 inches long. These sizes are available in measurements known as scales, which are proportional representations in keeping with the full-size dimensions of actual vehicles.

What Are the Scales of Diecast Models?

There more than a dozen scales used for various diecast models, but the most common scales for model cars and hot-rods are as follows:

• 1:12–This scale represents a model 1/12th the size of the original vehicle.
• 1:18–This scale represents a model 1/18th the size of the original vehicle.
• 1:24–This scale represents a model 1/24th the size of the original vehicle.
• 1:64–This scale represents a model 1/64th the size of the original vehicle.
• 1:128–This scale represents a model 1/128th the size of the original vehicle.

Ironically, as the scale number increases, the model vehicle size decreases. For instance, considering race cars specifically, a 1:12 diecast model car may measure about 14 inches in length; a 1:18 model may measure about 12 inches in length; a 1:24 diecast model may measure about 8 inches in length; a 1:64 model may measure about 3 inches in length; and a 1:128 model may measure about 1 inch in length.

Other considerations for collectors of diecast models in regard to scale are available investment funds and display space. Obviously, the larger the model cars are, the more funds and space you will need to purchase and display them. Some model car collectors prefer to keep their models in uniform scales, while other collectors like to have assorted sizes of model cars. Whatever your choices are,  showcase those diecast models proudly, but resist the urge to “play” with them if you want to increase their value over time.

So whether you’re a fan of Dale Earnhardt Junior or Mark Martin in the NASCAR Series, Danica Patrick or Elio Castroneves in the IndyCar Series, Todd Bodine or Ron Hornaday in the Camping World Truck Series, or any other driver in any racing series, you’re sure to find diecast models representing their vehicles, along with hot-rod model cars of numerous race car drivers.

How to Teach Kids About Time Management

Time management is perhaps one of the hardest things that we could teach the kids especially at such a young age. Children tend to take time for granted. Childhood is the stage when time management is not a big deal. Children think only of how to spend time in the best they can without thinking how to use time wisely. Children have no sense of time. They think nothing of how to manage time wisely.

As a mother, I haven’t had any problem regarding my son’s behavior towards time when he was a young boy. I got only one child and time management wasn’t a problem at all. I woke him up early in the morning so that I could prepare him for school. He would promptly wake up and while still closing his eyes I would feed him, change his clothes and then off I send him to school. My son was an obedient boy when he was just a little kid and what I told him to do, he would promptly obey.

When he was older, I had a hard time waking him up. He sleeps soundly and I could hardly wake him up. He postpones everything he was told to do.  He always tells me that it could be done tomorrow or the next day. I am very serious where time management is concerned and it maddens me to find out that my son doesn’t know the value of time management the least. I think I haven’t done what was right in teaching my son to be time conscious. Now that he is already an adult, it is very hard to teach him how to manage his time wisely. He seems to think that he has all the time in this world to do his thing.

Teaching time management must be planned the earliest possible time in a child’s life so that the child would get used to it and maintains it as he grows older. Parents must not wait for a time to teach the kids about time management. As early as possible, a child must be aware what time management could do to his life in the future. And as parents, we have to set an example for them to follow. Before teaching the kids time management, we have to set good examples as models that they look up to. Parents often become naggers when dealing about a lot of things but we often forget that we aren’t also doing what is right. So, before trying to teach the kids about time management, let us be the models for them.

Every person, be he or she is an adult or a child would learn something through constant practice. It becomes a ritual in one’s life what he or she does every day. The good thing here is that when kids are taught time management in the earliest age, they could grow up being time conscious. A person when taught the right thing at an early age would get used to the situation that makes it a part of his or her life.

Train the child to wake up early in the morning. That should make for a good start. While the child is learning the importance of waking up early, he would soon realize that waking up early makes for not being late in school and not rushing to pack the things needed for school. By the time the child is used to the early bird thing, he would have learned the value of time management. Teaching the child to be prompt in doing errands is also a very good training method in time management. Every time we send our child for an errand we should instill in him or her promptness of the errand to be done and accomplished. Children must see the importance of accomplishing things promptly.

In school where I teach very young kids, I always tell them to pass their works on time. I always remind them that those who pass their works earlier would receive stars. That way, the kids will do their best to work better. In my experience, kids would work better and faster if given good incentives. Time management is better taught with the teacher’s initiative in giving incentives for the little kids.

The same is true at home; the kids must start at an early age to see the importance of time management. It is every parent’s duty to teach his or her child to value time management. Starting early is still the best method of teaching a child the right attitude towards everything he or she does in life.

How to Teach Kids About Good Citizenship

Teaching preschoolers about good citizenship is very important because this means that you are molding them to become useful citizens who are able to help in the progress of a country.  While preschoolers are very young and they could not fully understand what good citizenship means; the core point in teaching them about good citizenship is to make them aware of the good values that a good citizen must possess.  They don’t need to know that they are learning about good citizenship but what you teach them and what they learn as preschoolers will help enhance their good characteristics that will turn them into good citizens in the future.

Teaching preschoolers about good citizenship must start from the teacher who is the role model in the classroom.  And while other people influence the preschoolers to become good citizens; the teacher is still the best person to teach the preschoolers about good citizenship because preschoolers always look up to their teacher as the best person to teach them about anything.

How can you teach preschoolers about good citizenship?

Be a good teacher

A good teacher knows her roles as a teacher.  She must present herself as a role model in school.  A good teacher greets the young kids, plays with them, talks to them and tells them stories that are interesting to the kids.  These good attitudes will teach the kids about how to treat their classmates, siblings, parents and other people around them.  If the preschoolers experience all pleasantness inside the school; they will become pleasant people too which will be a good foundation of becoming a good citizen.

Be strict but kind

Being strict does not mean shouting and giving stern look or lecturing the kids.  Being strict applies to rules that must be followed in school.  If a child does not follow rules; you have to do something.  Even preschoolers need rules to follow.  At a young age, kids will not learn if they are allowed to do what they wish to do in school.  Always make sure that the kids are following rules and obeying what you tell them to do.  This is one way of training the preschoolers to become good citizens.  People cannot have their own ways as they wish.  As citizens; people will always follow laws, rules, regulations and anything set to be followed;  whether they want it or not.  Teaching the preschoolers about obedience and some responsibilities will teach them about good citizenship.

Teach them about good values

There are countless good values that you can teach the preschoolers.  Just guide them through and for sure they will learn eventually.  What you do and what you say are followed by the preschoolers so as a teacher you should always aim for the best examples to set in school.  Preschoolers are young and they learn everything they see around; if the teacher present herself as a role model and practices good values in school; there is no reason why the preschoolers will not learn about good citizenship.  It is the good presentation of the teacher that the kids will always remember so the more good values the teacher displays in school, the more the kids will learn about good citizenship.

Be a good listener

As a teacher, you must be a good listener.  If a kid is shouting you, the teacher, is trying to silence him by scolding him; the preschoolers will think that what you are doing is the proper way to handle things.  That is not teaching them to be good citizens.  Listening should be one of the factors that the teacher should teach the young kids.  Children need someone to listen to them.  That is your role as a teacher.  Listening to the kids and embracing their problems will teach them about freedom of expression.   Be sure to handle the situation if it goes out of hand so that the preschoolers will see the importance of listening and addressing the problem presented.

Teaching preschoolers about good citizenship is a good way of molding them to be worthwhile citizens in the future.

If you won’t give your kids attention, someone else will.

Not getting the attention kids need from their parents, they will follow any “role model” that happens to be around.  This may be an older brother who has already gone to juvenile a few times, gets suspended a lot, or has already dropped out of school.  The role model might be an older kid in the neighborhood who the child looks up to.  There is this major fallacy and practice that happens in schools across the country that somebody in the school can serve as sort of a role model, positive influence, or mentor to such a child.  I have learned that this is hogwash because nobody in the schools can provide these children with what they really need and want.  They want attention from somebody they can truly identify with – like say, a family member.  Compounding this is the fact that nobody in the schools has the kind of time these kids need.  But somebody in the neighborhood might have the time.  Besides, there are too many kids in the schools who need this kind of time.  Truly identifying and bonding with someone involves spending significant time doing something together.  Your only options in the schools are to spend a very limited, slotted amount of time together, doing such things as playing a board game, talking, eating lunch together, or shooting some hoop.

As a school psychologist, I’ve done the things that psychologists, social workers, counselors and other assorted “specialists” across the country have done to try and identify with, or role model for these kids.  For example, taking a group of boys on Friday and shooting some hoop.  Of course they enjoy getting out of the classroom and having some fun.  I try to encourage them to do well in school and listen to their teacher, and use the time together as an unconditional reward.  The difference between me or some other staff member acting as role model, and a negative role model in the child’s life outside of school, is that the outside role model is not trying to get the child to do well in school.  This role model isn’t saying you should listen to your teacher and do well in school.  And if he is, he isn’t living these words, or he didn’t live these words.  In other words, this role model isn’t modeling the kind of behavior we desire in school.  The child is seeing something different in the real-world outside of school.

Something educators and society in general can’t seem to accept is that the school is a place where a child has to do what he is told and work.  Educators try to be chummy and connect with him – but the educator’s responsibility is to get him to do his work and follow the rules.  Outside of school these rules don’t apply to these kids.  The outside role model is more fun and exciting.  He doesn’t make the child do boring work or follow stupid rules.  He has the same rules as the child.  He doesn’t have any real responsibility to the child.  It’s the same thing with parenting.  Parenting can be fun and “buddy-buddy,” but a good parent sometimes has to be the mean disciplinarian, the “bad guy.”

A parent is automatically, by default, a role model once they have a child.  There really is no choice involved.  Of course, they can be a good, bad, or absent one, but they are nevertheless a role model.  What the child sees from the role model over the years, even if that parent (or parents) is absent, influences their development.  Why do we need the term “role model?”  I am deeply concerned that the term has done more harm than good because it often excuses or undermines the importance of parents and close family.  For absent or busy parents, it is reassuring and eases any possible feelings of guilt to know that other persons can serve as a “role model” for their child.  Kids who have involved parents (or parent), and/or close family members, serving as their natural role model(s), are not the ones struggling in school and life.  Are you going to be your child(ren’s) role model?

Hobbies For Kids

It is good for everyone to have a hobby, including children. Hobbies can give children something fun to participate in! Children can learn from their hobbies, whether it is learning how to create or play something, or about the items they are gathering together. Hobbies can also keep children out of trouble, away from any peers that may be a bad influence, and it gives them something to do besides watching television and playing video games all of the time. Hobbies for kids also provide them with a sense of pride. They will be proud to show off the hobbies they participate in or collect. So as you can see, children having hobbies can benefit them in a few ways!

So what kind of hobbies for kids can your little one take part in? The choices are almost endless! You can find a hobby for most interests, whether your child wants to create something, participate in a sport or class, or collect various items! If you still need a little help, then here are is a list of kid hobby ideas.

One hobby that kids can try is playing a musical instrument. This can help them to learn how to read and play music. This can include playing the piano, guitar, flute, and violin. Some of these interests may take lessons and classes to learn, while others can be self-taught from a music book. Regardless, the key is to both practice and enjoy playing their instrument!

Arts and crafts make another great hobby! With this hobby, they can learn how to use their imagination and creativity to create something new to show off, wear, or express themselves with. They can do different crafts such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, and embroidery. They can make jewelry, key chains, and glasses straps out of beads and/or thread. Children can also create a scrapbook, paint, draw, or take part in photography. Some of these art hobbies may take some time to learn, while they may pick up on others quickly!

Hobbies for kids can also include playing different sports. You can find different teams for school and neighborhoods, or just let them play with friends in the backyard or park. Sports activities can include baseball, softball, football, soccer, and basketball. Children can also take part in track and field, gymnastics, running, and yes, cheerleading. Sports hobbies will not only give them something fun to do, but they will get the exercise they need and learn how to work as a team.

One other popular kid hobby would be creating models. This can include airplanes, cars, and boats. This can be a fun, interesting, and challenging hobby. It can give children a sense of how these mobiles are made, while teaching them how to be patient when constructing these models. Now, this hobby can be a little difficult at first, but encourage, praise, and even help them to continue to try. As they get better at it, it can become less difficult and turn into something that they really love to do.

Children can also learn about carpentry and electronics as a hobby. This can help them to create or even fix a new item or gadget. This may take a little time to learn, but they won’t mind taking the time to learn something new of interest!

Maybe your child would like start a collection. There are many items your child can start collecting, such as stamps, coins, rocks, leaves, and postcards. Starting collections can be both interesting and fun, as they can collect an assortment of items in these collections. This can range from different shapes and colors, to different cities and countries. This can also help them to learn about geography, nature, and science as they add to their collection.

Children can also collect toys and other items that are geared towards a specific interest, such as animals, insects, fantasy, or characters. They can collect figurines, posters, stuffed animals, apparel, and accessories.

Hobbies for kids can also involve the use of different sets. Yes, they may be toys to some. But to children, it can help to enhance their hobby. One example would be a construction set. They can create different objects and models. They can also learn different skills, such as reasoning, perception, and putting pieces together to build.

As you can see, there are many hobbies for kids to choose from. Of course, you should find out from your child what he or she is interested in, and then go from there. In addition to hobbies being fun and educational, they can also give children career ideas to think about as they grow older.
